eBay photo requirements and the zoom threshold most sellers miss
eBay is more forgiving than Amazon, and that is exactly why it is easy to get lazy here. eBay does not force a white background. It recommends one, and its own guidance is blunt about the reason: listings with clean, well lit photos on plain backgrounds sell more. The platform rewards it in search placement rather than punishing you for skipping it.
The rules, exactly
- Background. White or very light grey is recommended, not mandatory. Nothing stops you from listing a photo shot on a carpet. Your conversion rate stops you.
- Size. 500 pixels on the longest side is the hard minimum. 1600 pixels is the number that matters: that is the exact threshold where eBay switches on zoom and enlargement on desktop. The maximum is 9000 pixels and 12 MB.
- Nothing added. Borders, text, artwork and watermarks are not allowed on eBay pictures. eBay's own attribution watermark is the exception, yours is not.
- Quantity. Up to 24 photos per listing, free. Use them.
The 1600 pixel lever
This is the most valuable line on this page. A buyer who can zoom is a buyer who can inspect condition, and on eBay, where a large share of stock is used or refurbished, inspection is the entire purchase decision. Upload at 1600 x 1600 and zoom turns on. Upload at 1200 and it does not, and you will never know what it cost you, because eBay does not report the sales you did not make.
Tips
- Square, 1600, white. That combination clears the minimum, triggers zoom, and matches the gallery crop. There is no reason to deviate.
- Used items need honesty photos. Photograph the flaw deliberately and clearly. Sellers think it costs sales; it prevents returns and negative feedback, which cost far more.
- The first photo is a thumbnail, not a portfolio piece. It is displayed tiny in search. Fill the frame with the product.
- Export rotation, do not rely on metadata. eBay handles EXIF orientation inconsistently. Save the file already rotated.
- Multi-variation listings. Each variation gets its own photo. A colour variation without a matching photo looks broken and buyers bounce.
